Affirmative Consent

Great Sex Starts With Consent

Spilt Milk is all about music, mates, and good times. A big part of that is making sure everyone feels safe and respected – on the dance floor, in the crowd, and beyond. That’s where affirmative consent comes in.

Affirmative consent means an enthusiastic, ongoing “yes” that’s ongoing and never assumed. It’s about checking in, listening, and making sure everyone feels comfortable and respected. Consent isn’t just about safety – it’s about making sure everyone enjoys the moment.

Consent can change at any time. Even if someone said “yes” earlier, they can change their mind. “No” is a complete sentence. If someone freezes, goes quiet, or pulls back, stop and make sure they’re okay. Pay attention to body language – if someone seems uncomfortable or withdrawn, check in.

Why does this matter at Spilt Milk?

Festivals are about connection – whether that’s dancing with friends or meeting new people. Respecting boundaries keeps the vibe positive for everyone. Amid the excitement, it’s important to remember that consent should be confirmed throughout. Asking simple questions like:

  • “Is this okay?”
  • “Do you want to keep going?”
  • “How does that feel?”

…helps everyone feel comfortable and respected. Seeking consent doesn’t kill the vibe – it makes it better.

The law in the ACT
Consent laws in the ACT have changed to reflect this approach. The law now requires consent to be affirmative – meaning active, mutual, and ongoing. Any sexual activity without consent is sexual violence.
