FROM SYDNEY
DRIVING
Sydney is 280km from Canberra, and if you’re planning a road trip it’ll take you around 3 hours straight down the Hume & Federal Highways. A little longer if you want to grab some road trip coffee or a cheeseburger.
FLYING
It’s only 55 minutes of flying time to get from Sydney to Canberra, with regular flights each day available on Jetstar, Virgin and Qantas. The airport is 7.5km from the city centre, and is serviced by taxis, Uber and Transport Canberra ACTION buses.
BUS
Forget what Miley said, this one’s all about what’s waiting on the other side, not the climb. Greyhound and Murray’s Bus offer express (and cheap) coach services from Sydney Central Station or the International Airport, direct to the Canberra CBD (Jolimont Centre). Hourly services depart from Sydney between 6am and 9pm on most days and it’s around three hours on the bus… unless Sydney traffic hits. Give yourself more time than you think you’ll need to avoid disappointment.
TRAIN
There is a direct rail service – and a pretty picturesque one, we’ll add – from Sydney to Canberra that departs from Central Station and heads south via Goulburn. The train takes around 4.5 hours to get from Sydney to Canberra. For more information check out the NSW Trainlink website.
FROM WOLLONGONG
DRIVING
You can get from Wollongong to Canberra in around 2.5 hours via the M31 and Hume/Federal Highway. As above, add a little interest to that number to allow for essential snack stops.
BUS
Murray’s run a coach once a day from Wollongong to Canberra return. It takes around 3.5 hours, pending traffic. You can find the timetable and tickets on their website here.
FROM WAGGA WAGGA
DRIVING
You can get from Wagga to Canberra in around three hours comfortably. It’s 243km if you travel via the Hume Highway and the easiest way to travel between the two.
FLYING
There are no direct flights from Wagga to Canberra, but there are regular flights from Wagga to Sydney and Sydney to Canberra on Jetstar, Virgin and Qantas. The airport is 7.5km from the city centre, and is serviced by taxis, Uber and ACTION Buses.
BUS & TRAIN
From Wagga’s central station you can jump on a train to Cootamundra, then connect to a bus through to Canberra. A coach service runs from Cootamundra straight into the CBD. For more information check out the NSW Trainlink website.
FROM MELBOURNE
DRIVING
Did someone say road trip? Prep your playlist, plan your pit stops, and follow the CityLink tollway to the western ring road and then join the Hume Highway. Near Yass, take the Barton Highway A25 turn off to Canberra.
FLYING
Flying is going to be the quickest way you’ll get from Melbourne to Canberra – clocking in at just over an hour – but is unlikely to be the cheapest option. Time is money though (right?) and there are regular daily flights with Rex, Jetstar, Virgin and Qantas from Melbourne to Canberra. Find the full list of flights on their websites.
TRAIN
There is no direct Canberra to Melbourne rail service. This service runs to Albury by train and will then transfer you to Canberra by bus. Alternately, catch the Melbourne to Sydney train and transfer to Canberra from Goulburn Railway Station. You can find timetables and booking information here.
BUS
